In 2023–2024, we carried out the project Journeys to the East: Digitization and Access to Objects from the Permanent Exhibition of the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw, during which we digitized as many as 525 objects from the Asia and Pacific Museum’s collections!

Among the digitized objects are: painted scrolls, miniatures, sculptures, dolls and theatrical masks, lacquer items, costumes, textiles, and jewelry. These objects represent key elements of the cultures from which they originate and hold significant historical and material value. Most of them were created in the 19th and 20th centuries, though some are older, such as relics of the Dong Son culture in Vietnam from the 1st millennium BC, sculptures from Gandhara, Chinese and Vietnamese ceramics from the 11th–14th centuries, and figurines from Tibet from the 17th century.

These objects—diverse in terms of materials and techniques—come from:

  • South Asia: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh
  • Southeast Asia: Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Thailand
  • East Asia: China, Tibet, Japan
  • Oceania: Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea

The full collection of objects will be presented in the second part of the Journeys to the East permanent exhibition, which is currently being prepared at the Asia and Pacific Museum.
